Happy Frog Soil

Hello planty friends!

Last weekend I potted up some plants and tried a new soil. Soil is the base of every plant, and its composition can make or break it for your planty friends.

When I first got into plants I just used the cheapest potting soil I could find (if I even bothered repotting). Then, I started adding some perlite to the mix. N

Now, I create a custom mix typically composed of potting soil, perlite, pumice, orchid bark, mosquito bits, and DE.

You can find all the specific ingredients I use here.

I wanted to try out a new soil base for a few reasons:

    1. I always seem to have fungus gnats, and I have a theory that some are being transferred into my home via soil.
    2. I’ve heard good things about this brand
    3. It looked nice and I like trying new things

I purchased Happy Frog soil from Amazon and tried it out last weekend. It seemed like a very dark and rich soil. I was really happy to see it had worm castings in the mix because those are full of nutrients. I wouldn’t use this soil alone for potting plants because even though it had some pumice it wouldn’t have been airy enough. I mixed it with some pumice, perlite, orchid bark, and mosquito bits.

Only time will tell how my plants do, but overall I am very happy with this soil and will likely purchase again. Although it was more expensive that picking up a bag at Home Depot or Lowes, it was convenient having it delivered to my front door. And I hope that it didn’t bring any pests into my home.
